What Is a Puja, Really?

What Is a Puja, Really?

A puja is a form of worship in which a devotee honours a deity through a sequence of offerings — light, water, flowers, food and, above all, attention. Each act is symbolic: the lamp is awareness, the water is purification, the flower is the offering of one's own heart.

The structure is not empty ceremony. It gives the mind a path to follow so that scattered attention gathers into devotion. This is why the same steps recur across rituals — they are a tested method for turning presence into prayer.

Whether performed at a temple or in your home, a puja asks for sincerity more than perfection. Understanding what each step means lets you participate with intention rather than imitation.
